Well it’s finally arrived, today is the Darkfall online release day. According to the forums there were some pre-orders which were filled quickly and today they will be allowing another batch of players to sign up.
Many people will moan about the fact that Adventurine are taking new players in batches rather than all at once, but I actually think it is a good move. Adventurine are no SOE or Blizzard and as a result don’t have the finances to risk opening tons of servers to start with, only to have to merge some later on if they are not all full. This way they ensure that each server they open has a good population at the beginning, sure they might have to merge later if people drop out of the game but it’s better than having empty servers from the off.
I’m actually looking forward to trying the game as it has some really nice ideas, I won’t go into them here as this isn’t a Darkfall news post but there is a nice post at Wikipedia about Darkfall as a game.
I’m not a massive fan of PvP in MMO’s but I do enjoy some now and again as a compliment to my PvE play in other games such as Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online. There’s something to be said for the increased danger element and the fact that you have to think a bit more, you can also pretend that your target is the annoying PvE player you met in your other game. I’m mainly going to be trying Darkfall though to see how the other features like the skill based system play out.
As I write this I’ve just completed my account registration and will wait for the chance later today, to buy the game itself. Keep an eye out here for my thoughts on Darkfall once I manage to get in game. Darkfall will be a 2nd game to Everquest 2 for me so expect views and experiences from a more casual viewpoint than some you’ll read on the web. How long will my foray into Darkfall last? Only time will tell…

We'll see how all of this turns out in time.
I've been checking in on Darkfall for about 2 years now, watching its progression. While I want it to succeed because it's a good step in trying to bring different features to the mmo genre, one of the major flaws would be their execution.
Sure they are a relatively small company, but the way that they left so many people in the dark was quite nail biting at times.
I probably will check the game out however, as it does look interestingly enough, even if just for a month or two. I'm not sure if I want to join early and see how it is from launch, or wait a month or so first to get the kinks out.
I'll be trying it from the start once I manage to get on. I know Wodge from this site will be playing a Dwarf so to be able to group up I'll probably go Dwarf/Human/Mirdain as they are allies.
The Darkfall forums have been down most of yesterday and today due to a large amount of traffic. They say sales are opening tomorrow. Whether this announcement went up yesterday or this morning I'm not sure so it could be today or tomorrow we can purchase the game.
As I'm a die-hard PvE-player it is not exactly the emphasis on PvP that drives me towards Darkfall. It is indeed the fresh ideas, which I'm sure will be the hardest challenge to balance out…after all, there probably is a reason why none of these have been implemented in most other MMO's out there.
I recently read about the "karma"-system (not the official name!) where killing other players of the same alignment, makes you "evil" which puts some restrains on certain parts of the gameplay. This concept might make the PvP way easier for me to swallow, so so far I'm positive towards my possible subscription to Darkfall. Like Droogie I probably too will stay away from subbing until a month or so…I've been the paying guinea pig of too many an MMO, so this time I will try not to fall for that same old trick…try, I say
So.. have you gotten to purchase your copy of the game thats been released for three days yet?
I think in the past three days its been down more than up. I just hope they get it figured out. Ive been waiting for years, I can wait a bit longer, I guess.
I just hope to god this isnt another Vanguard.
Welcome Jim.
I've registered a profile and entered my details, but still waiting for the option to buy it. The forums say servers are up, so I think they are making sure it's stable before taking 1000's more players on. I'm in no rush, but it would be nice to know when we can buy the game.
I also hope it's not another Vanguard, that game had so much promise.
Vanguard is a great game, but was far too tough for the average player these days.
Graphically a good looking game, nice balance of characters, large playing area but lacked quick travel options in the early days and was quite buggy at the start.
I stopped playing, but couldn't get back into it. Shame, enjoyed when I played with friends, but without friends, it's a slow… slow grind… EQ Classic style grind.
I played Vanguard during beta and wanted to play it during launch, but my computer died the month before, I was so bummed. My friend ended up getting the game, but ended up quitting because I wasn't able to play.
I'd still like to go back and play it, I saw it for $20 the other day.
I never realised there were so many free mmorpg, your name link has opened up a new avenue of adventure for me Droogie
