Kobolds, Trolls and Ganking

Darkfall Online - KoboldThis is likely to be my final post for Darkfall Online for reasons I’ll go into later in this post.

Since my last post I have been exploring the land around Eanna and today decided to venture a bit further out. I travelled north East out of town and around the mountains just outside the main gate. After crossing a river and wandering a bit further on I discovered a small tribe of Kobolds.

The first thing that struck me about these Kobolds is there are not the brightest of creatures as if more than 2 came towards me I’d hide behind a tree and they would lose interest. I managed to break them up and take out around 5 or 6 of them, picking up more arrows from their corpses.

Wading through a marsh towards distant ruinsAfter dispatching the Kobolds I decided to continue North and after wading through a marsh by the light of the full moon, I came across some ruins which looked impressive by moonlight. Intrigued by the ruins I decided to take a closer look and made my way around the edges of the area until I could find a way in. The ruins consisted of 2 main areas perched on large rocky outcrops connected by a bridge. As I made my way around looking for a path up I discovered a series of huts surrounded by a wall and with what looked like more Kobolds wandering around the area.Kobold houses

I managed to take down all of the Kobolds with a combination of my 2 handed Orc sword and my trusty bow, before finding a path leading to the top of the ruins. Once up there I came across two players, one named 7 up (obviously a fan of said drink, though not a great MMO name) and another player who’s name I can’t remember. I sent a tell to say I was just exploring and was told “ok”, so continued to explore the area. Whilst taking some pictures of the area for this post I was jumped by Kobolds and Trolls, I tried to back off allowing the other players to take the creatures from me but they made no move to do so. I had no choice but to take down the creatures and continue trying to get a good view of the statues.statues2

After I managed to take a shot of the 2 statues you can see in the image here I began to move away and 7 up seeing I was wounded decided to run after me zapping me in the back as I ran. It seems that 7 up had decided that by defending myself I was taking his kills, apparently I was supposed to stand there and let them kill me rather than defend myself. Had he/she taken the creatures from me in the first place when given the chance there would have been no need for me to take 7 up’s kills as he/she had said. I am confident that waiting for me to become wounded before killing me was the plan all along.

After dying I re-equipped and ran all the way back to find they had left the area, so decided to explore the ruins further. It seemed all the Trolls had been killed and so I went deep into the ruins, a trip that was worthwhile as I found a chest hidden in one corner.Chest in the Troll area of the ruins The chest needed no key and so was opened quickly allowing me to loot the gold inside.

I began to make my way out of the ruins but discovered the Trolls were re-spawning. With my 100+ arrows I managed to take out 5 of the Trolls and make my way around to the edge of the ruins themselves. I spotted a player in the distance firing magic at the Kobolds down below. As I moved in the players direction 2 Trolls came out of the ruins and I found myself running backwards frantically firing arrows in their direction. The player was aiding me with the use of her magic bolts and I managed to take both of them down.

Once at the foot of the ruins a few Kobolds were wearing the caster down so I laid into their backs with my sword and between us we killed each and every one of them. I left the caster to loot and decided to call it a day.

It may have been my last Darkfall session as I have 4 days left on my subscription and currently do not feel it’s worth continuing to pay for this game. Don’t get me wrong, Darkfall is not a bad MMO at all, it has some nice ideas and it’s fun exploring. The problem for me all along has been the player-base, or the majority of them. There are far too many players out there who don’t care at all about killing their own race, for me Darkfall was meant to be PvP but against hostile races rather than my own. I also didn’t feel the need to log in and play as I do with Everquest 2. In fact whilst playing Darkfall I kept thinking “there’s much more interesting things to do with my guild in EQ2″. So I believe it’s time for me to sign out of Darkfall Online for now, maybe I’ll return in the future, maybe not. To those I met along the way I wish you good luck and who knows, if you see Yetian Teaghlach in another MMO some day maybe you’ll say hi. ;)

I will now turn my attention to my other MMO’s and I may begin to write my posts for those games in journal form if you enjoyed the format of my Darkfall Online posts.
