After about a week of my 30-day trial of the 8 year old MMOFPS World War II: Battleground Europe, I am surprised at how exciting I’m finding this game. It might just be the smell of new MMO, but it’s like this game is everything I ever wanted Counterstrike and Battlefield to be.
I think the compelling part is that it feels like the actions of my avatar has an impact on the grander scheme of things. That and the fact that there’s a progression in the “story” (split up into campaigns) AND that my character progresses up thru the ranks which means more weaponry and different roles to take in the different battles.
The game might have a somewhat steep learning curve at first, but the good thing is that all the vets knows exactly what to do, which means that in an army setting you just follow the leaders directions and then automatically learn for yourself how stuff works. I think this is true for most MMOs except that noobs SEEM to be somewhat humble in this game instead of claiming uberness from the get go because they got a level 10 Runescape character. Don’t get me wrong, there ARE bickering and yelling when people disagree on which strat to go for, which cities to defend and which to attack, but ultimately it comes down to this: If you dont cooporate, you will probably have a tough time keeping and gaining territories.
Right now I feel like subbing to WWII:BE when my 30-day trial is over, but it may just be because I have a set goal I am very excited about. When I reach rank 5 I will be able to fill the role of a sniper, which always was my favourite thing about multiplayer FPSs. After rank 5 I hope I will have a new goal, perhaps trying out some vehicles, planes or boats or something like that…else I’ll just quit my sub and remember the good times…cuz they sure are.
My primary MMO is EverQuest 2, and that is a spot well deserved, but WWII:BE could be the perfect secondary MMO for me, as it differs VERY much in gameplay. This would also mean that I dont have to Kill 10 Rats[5] in every single MMO I play!

I'm a married man, Yeti!
….oh now I see what you mean
It's not a game for the average lack luster fan boy of online gaming. It's a grand strategy and tactical strategy, combat flight sim, armored vehicle sim, and it's lastly a great way to spend riotous evening killing people from around the world in the comfort of your own computer chair. It's everything a true war gamer would hope for. You can even be the good guys. The Axis of course.
Ffaffner a lack luster fan boy? Never!!
He's just a slack online gamer who can tire of a certain game as any of us can.
