A quick post today, regarding crafting in MMOs. Yesterday a simple thanks from a guild mate for an item I made, got me thinking.
Crafting In MMOs is something I always enjoy doing, yes it can be a grind but I do enjoy having the ability to make items for myself and members of my guild or other in game friends.
In Everquest 2 I currently have a Master Tailor (80), a Master Weapon smith (80) and an 80 Woodworker who hasn’t finished his master quest, as I’m lazy.
Each one I created to primarily make items for my characters but also to be able to make items for the guild as and when an item was needed. My first top level crafter was my Woodworker and he chose that craft as the guild needed one at the time. The same could be said of my Tailor, as our tailor retired from the game. As a Warden I needed leather armour and as the guild was without our tailor I chose to take up that craft on Yetian.
My Weapon smith was created as I just fancied one and we didn’t have a top level weapon smith, so again it was useful for all in the guild. My latest alt Gallish is taking up the path of jewelery as I can then make my own scout abilities and spells. We already have a couple of Jewelers in the guild so this time I haven’t chosen a craft for that reason, but if no other jewelers are around I can make bits for guild mates. It never hurts to have more than one crafter of the same craft, in your guild.
So as a final question to you all. Why do you craft in MMO’s?
Is it simply to complete another path for your character? To sell and make profit? To help yourself? Or to help others? Or could it be for another reason I havn’t thought of here?

Originally I crafted in MMO before I was a guild member to be self-sufficient in the adept III abilities that I needed as I levelled. Then I wanted to make my own food and drink. Now I have more money though, I can see why people think it is easier just to commission spells from the suckers who can make them
You can make money doing it, however the best way I found was to make the spells you are going to level into in advance and try and sell them for a nice profit on the broker, making them again for yourself up until the point you use them.
After I joined a guild though, it was nice to be able to help other guild members with skills they needed.
But hell, creating stacks of provisions shouldn’t involve the pain that it does. I speak to people in-game who are their “guild provisioner” and boy do I feel sorry for them
Initially I started crafting to be be able to make my own spells. Transferring from another MMO the crafting system was, compared to what I was used to, quite impressive. Being new to my guild I also wanted to contribute, or at least not exploit the helpful ppl in my new guild (I know now it would’t be an issue, but I came from litteraly another culture, and needed to adapt).
Theese days I must admit I can’t really be bothered crafting, or rather, lvling a crafter. I’ll ofc always make whatever is needed for the guild if able
I have always enjoyed crafting in all games, and I like to be able to provide a services for guild mates. I never craft for profit, mainly because i have never really found there to be much profit in doing so. I tend to try and match the craft to my class so that it is useful for me, as well as feeling more comfortable from a roleplay perspective (blacksmith wizard feels wierd).
Its often a grind, particularly in EQ2 i found it to be so, but quite rewarding when you get there and you can help kit out guildmates. Its good to be in a guild where every craft is catered for. I was the tailor who’s boots you filled as you know Yeti
Yup magnu, but you are welcome to your boots should you decide to come back.:)
