Are you an MMO completionist?

As some of you may know, I like most of my guild have an army of Alts in EQ2. My latest plan was to work the higher level ones that are not 90, to 90 to get the xp bonus for the remaining characters. The target alt was to be my warlock Naitey who is 83 at the moment.

This was until I got thinking about my main Yetian the Warden. I really need to be working his AA’s as he’s only on 208 at the moment, so I began working his remaining quests and finding new ones. I then thought it would be nice to finish some of the main quest lines that I’ve yet to finish on any character. These include quest lines such as Swords of Destiny and the Claymore lines.

I started working those and then ended up finding a Heritage quest I hadn’t completed. For those that don’t know these are quests that give items from the original Everquest as rewards, as well as personal and guild status. To date I think I’ve finished 36 HQ’s and have 7 or so in my journal, with one still to pickup.

I intend to complete all the HQ’s, then go back to quest lines and then other random quests to complete my AA’s.

So what about the rest of you? Do you have one character you like to complete all quests on, or is there some other aspect of your chosen MMO that you just have to complete?

Flying mounts in EQ2

As well as Everquest next SOE are also working on expansions for both current Everquest titles. The one I’m interested in at the moment is the Everquest 2 expansion Destiny of Velious, the return of the frozen continent which is due for release in February.

I have fond memories of Velious from the original Everquest, wandering through the frozen wastes and dodging ice giants. Now someone will have to remind me of the large tower on Velious which players could fight their way up. I remember fighting through the tower with a Gnome alt of Pandemic, an Enchanter who aided my character on many occasions.

Anyway enough  nostalgia, the new expansion has the usual tons of quests, a couple of overland zones and more than a few raid zones. There are 10 instanced dungeon’s more HQ’s and a Signature quest line, a new battlegrounds area (I still haven’t played any of the existing ones) and something else…

Whats next for Everquest? EQNext, of course!

That Fan Faire thing is currently going on in that den of inequity and filth that is Las Vegas. From there SOE are holding various panels on the state of the various SOE MMOs.

All standard stuff on the upcoming stuff for EQ2 and SOEs other MMOs, apart from the EQNext Panel.  EQNext is just the name SOE are giving to the follow up to EQ2, the EQNext name is only being used for the time being, and it probably won’t be called EverQuest 3.  From what I’ve read over on EQ2Wire (here, here, here, here and here!) it seems they’re going for somewhere between EQ1 (less classes etc.) and EQ2 (ease of travel, streamlining of content etc.).  Of the images I have seen, the game is looking very nice indeed, seem to have managed to inject some much needed atmosphere (the joys of shader model 3), I found that EQ2 was always a little flat looking.

There wasn’t much info on gameplay, but I guess it will be similar to EQ1 and 2, no Vindictus style realtime hack and slashery.  Pretty much a graphical update with some tweaking then, which is exactly what the EQ fanbase wants.

Who knows if those EQ devs had a gander at the Symposiums very own EQNext(ish) and pilfered/borrowed some ideas from there?

EverQuest 2: Free to Play?

Today, Dave “SmokeJumper” Georgeson, EQ2’s Senior Producer announced EverQuest 2 Extended,  a version of EQ2, that is rather limited but free to play.

The FAQ on it is located here.  To me, it seems like a unlimited trial, very similar to Age of Conan, limited in what classes/races you can pick, and not being able to chat in certain channels. Obviously SOE want a piece of the very lucrative F2P pie, and call my cynical, but I personally think this is ridiculous.

Payment options etc. after the break.

Not Playing MMOs.

Ok, I guess I should come clean.  I’ve not been playing many MMOs in the last few weeks.  Odd trial here and there, a brief stint in Age of Conan, but that’s it.

Why?  Complete and utter bordom of the genre.  Why am I still posting on and reading the various MMO websites?  I know of all the good stuff that is just around the corner…

Tindr the Bard – New Halas Alt

Tindr the Barbarian Bard of neXusWell new Halas arrived with the recent EQ2 game update and with it my latest alt… erm 2 actually. That’s right, my tank alt Rive was created and then didn’t really go anywhere. The reason was a discussion on guild voice came to the conclusion I should make a Troubadour as we were short on utility classes and as I’ve never played a bard to high levels I figured what the hell and did so.

As a result Tindr the bard is now level 24 and has just finished questing through Halas. There are not far off 100 quests I reckon in the Frostfang sea which is the new starter zone and includes the city of new Halas. The city itself is not bad looking and I’ll include a few pics at the end of this post for you to have a look over.

Care in the Community

Just a quick post today.

I was on Splitpaw my Everquest 2 server when a player named Gungydin offered to give 2 new players cash to buy a starter horse as he had received money from a player for making an item. He said that he didn’t charge for labour so was giving away the cash to new players and ended up giving 3 platinum to 3 players in total.

I always like it when I see acts of kindness in MMO’s to help out new players. Sure some will say they could earn it but with mounts now available for real life cash those who are willing to spend money can buy them without earning anything in the game anyway.

I always drop heals on injured solo players and buffs when I can. I generally don’t have cash to hand out but I have often made things for people using my own rares or buying a few and making out I had them on me. ;)

What acts of MMO kindness have you seen in your MMO’s? Or what have you done to help others?

Forming a Guild (again)

Had some epic drama in my (as in I was the leader) former guild, Purge. So decided to up sticks and start afresh.

So this morning at 10:32am British Time, Parallel Dementia was formed!

Some people on this site may recognise the name from EQ1, we were a casual raid guild there on Venril Sathir, before the free server transfers killed all the existing guilds, can’t have 5 guilds competing for Kael Arena!

Anyways, I think I’ve learned a fair bit from Purge, being able to say “No” to people is a good tip for prospective guild leaders, your raid force will suffer if it has 19 Shadowknights!

Also I believe the move to a Tier 3 guild hall was a mistake, the place is too large to decorate to a standard I’d be happy with, and is also very laggy. Can sometimes take upwards of 5 minutes to load some of the NPCs in! So we’ll be sticking with a Tier 1 guild hall in Halas.

Will keep people posted on what’s happening with the guild, and if you’d like to join up, shoot me a tell on Wodge! :D

EQ2 Tanking Tips?

It’s almost that time again… Alt creation time!

As you know if you are a reader of this fine blog, I’ve talked about the upcoming Halas update and the fact that I will be making my first tank alt since my days in the original Everquest. Well that’s not strictly true, I did have a previous tank alt or two neither of which made it past level 20.

I am a healer at heart, always have been and no matter what other classes I try I always have a healer main. I have various alts in EQ2 covering most archetypes, but no plate tank. I do have a 48 monk though he’s too busy drinking Jum Jum to tank and monks are not often used as main tanks. Having a tank alt can only help me be a better healer, seeing things from the view of the one I’m always trying to keep alive.

This new incarnation of tank type goodness shall be my main active alt (at least that’s the plan) and as the players of Splitpaw are a fine bunch I don’t want to scare them witless after one group with me.

So I thought now would be a good time to seek the wisdom of my fellow Everquest 2 players and see what tanking gems I can uncover. It’s not just EQ2 of course, many tanking methods work on various MMO’s so lets see what advice can be gleaned from the MMO world in general. After a discussion with a member of my guild I’ve settled on a Beserker for the character class.

I am aware of a few things myself, I have picked up a few bits of advice during my years of healing all you meat shields. Techniques such as turning the mob and body pulling are things I can manage after a few disasters are out of the way.

Who knows? If enough advice comes this way I could compile it into a guide and immortalise your name alongside your top tips.

With that in mind, it’s over to you. ;)

EQ2 upcoming update on test

The next EQ2 game update is now on the test server, complete with Halas and the travel revamp.

I’m looking forward to Halas though I’m not sure what to make of the changes to the travel system. There is a lot said about the system in the update notes though I am not totally clear on how it will all work. Will the click to use a Griffon or Sokokar mean instant travel or do you still travel on the mount?

Now when selecting a travel location via teleportation, bell, or sokokar/horse/griffon etc. you will do so through a travel map.

Simply double click your choice, or select it and then press OK to be whisked away.

Does “whisked away” mean you click and pop up in your new location, or in the cases of automated mount travel, you still have to fly?

Does the travel revamp take away more immersion from the game?

There are a lot more changes in the upcoming update so I’ll let you read them rather than detail them all here.
