Are there any good sci-fi MMOs?

Jumpgate sync'd flightCarrying on from my earlier post about Sci-Fi MMOs, I decided to take a look around some of the Sci-Fi MMOs that are due to be released this year (with any luck).

One of the games that stood out was Jumpgate Evolution.  An impressive looking game by NetDevil.  The game is based on space travel and looks a lot like EvE-Online by CCP, however Jumpgate Evolution has one overriding difference, in that it allows you to fly your ship rather than clicking on an area of space to move about like Eve.

Surprised by an 8-year old

After about a week of my 30-day trial of the 8 year old MMOFPS World War II: Battleground Europe, I am surprised at how exciting I’m finding this game. It might just be the smell of new MMO, but it’s like this game is everything I ever wanted Counterstrike and Battlefield to be.

Add your own story to Norrath

Write your own story into Everquest 2I was having a read of the latest blog posts on Cuppytalk the other day I spotted the post about a recent EQ2 dev blog post about Player written books in EQ2.

I like the idea and I’m sure the Role Playing community in Everquest 2 will be getting very excited about this addition to the game. We have a guild hall library which needs filling and this will be a great way to do that.

In fact there are all kinds of things you could write about to fill your bookshelves.

Coping with the burn-out

Did you ever find yourself standing, facing a wall and waiting for “something” to happen in your favourite MMO? You know, like hanging around waiting for a group, chatting a bit in /guild, deciding which toon to play or which zone to adventure in. Then suddenly glancing at your watch realizing you’ve been “playing” for 3 hours without getting anything gamerelated done at all. It can be a really annoying feeling taking a wife-faction hit without getting into any action or fun, and I bet this feeling has lead to quite a bit of either MMO-jumping or MMO-quitting.

First Footsteps in the Fields

First stepsAfter Sres’s posts here on MMO-Symposium I decided to give Battleground Europe (World War II Online) a go and signed up for the free trial.

As is usual for me I didn’t do any training other than the first few tutorials you have to complete before you can see active duty, all of which only took around 5-10 mins.

To Subscribe…

…or not to subscribe, that is my question. Or rather, is the monthly subscription model for MMO’s a factor in an online game’s survival?

About two years ago I would have said no and was dead set against paying a monthly subscription – after having forked out to play Myth of Soma for over a year. In fact, I lapped up the opportunity to play Guild Wars when it was released with its then revolutionary ’subscription-free’ financing model, and it must have worked, because it kept me playing through the Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North campaigns. Even now, after trialling some of the more recent MMOs like EVE:Online and Age of Conan, I’m usually put off further playing because it would entail an on-going financial commitment I’m just not willing to make. And I’m convinced that most casual gamers don’t play MMOs for this very reason as they are used to purchasing a game and playing it whenever they like at no extra cost, unless they specifically want to purchase add-on or third party content.

Yetian’s Epic – Bite of the Wolf

Yetian with his Warden Epic A big thanks to Wodge & Coriella of Splitpaw as well as neXus’s very own Orang for the last 2 instances needed for Yetian’s Warden Epic, Bite of the Wolf. We also had help from a few other kind souls who I apologise to for not remembering their character names.

I’d also like to thank the rest of my guild for helping with the other epic stages. Our epics quests are much easier now we have a good set of level 80 characters to help each other through.

The benefits of a good guild

Last night I logged on to Everquest 2 for our guilds Thursday Heritage Quest night. Each week we get together to complete Heritage Quests to earn status for the guild as well as experience and status for those involved. Status allows the guild to level which in turns unlocks various new items and sometimes amenities for the guild hall.

This week our HQ organiser had planned for us to do An ancient desert power which takes place in the Sinking Sands. We headed out with a full group mentoring down to 65 and picked up a few other players on the way also wanting to do the HQ.
